Course Description
The Combat Application Tourniquet (CAT) Drills course is an intensive, hands-on law enforcement training program designed to prepare officers to operate effectively under the most demanding and realistic conditions. This two-hour live-fire session focuses on developing the critical skill of tourniquet application during dynamic situations where both medical response and tactical performance are required.
In high-threat environments, the ability to control life-threatening bleeding while maintaining operational capability can determine the outcome of a confrontation. This course places officers in realistic, stress-based scenarios where they must apply a Combat Application Tourniquet (CAT) to themselves or a partner and continue to perform essential firearm operations. Through carefully structured drills, participants will learn how to identify when and where a tourniquet is necessary, apply it correctly and rapidly, and continue engaging with their weapon system under simulated combat conditions.
The training environment replicates the stress and urgency of real-world incidents, requiring students to think, move, and respond decisively while injured or assisting a fellow officer. Each drill reinforces muscle memory and tactical efficiency, ensuring that officers can remain functional and effective even after sustaining an injury or while providing buddy-aid in the field.
Throughout the course, certified instructors provide individualized coaching to refine both medical technique and firearm manipulation while the tourniquet is in place. Officers gain confidence in their ability to perform critical tasks one-handed, transition between weapon systems, and sustain effective communication with their team under pressure.
Upon completion, each participant will receive a certificate documenting two hours of law enforcement skill development training. More importantly, officers will leave with the competence and confidence to manage catastrophic bleeding while continuing to protect themselves and others in high-stress encounters.
The CAT Drills course is essential for any law enforcement professional seeking to enhance their survivability and tactical performance. It reinforces the principle that being tactically sound also means being medically prepared. This course builds the mindset and ability to stay in the fight — and stay alive — when seconds count.
