Course Description
Note: Street shoes & work boots are not allowed on the DT mat. Bare feet, socks, or wrestling shoes are allowed.
This defensive tactics course builds practical, street-relevant skills for law enforcement officers using proven Jiu-Jitsu principles. Through intensive hands-on drills, participants develop proficiency in control, restraint, and escape techniques that emphasize leverage, balance, and positional dominance rather than brute strength. The result is a more effective, safer approach to managing resistant or aggressive subjects while reducing the risk of injury to officers and suspects.
Training focuses on foundational mechanics — base, posture, weight distribution, and transitions — and translates those mechanics into tactical applications officers use every day. Students practice pressure-based control holds, compliant and non-compliant handcuffing positions, escapes from common grabs and clothing restraints, ground recovery and positional control, and methods for safely moving or securing subjects.
Scenarios are realistic and scalable: drills begin at low intensity and progress to higher stress levels so muscle memory, timing, and decision-making develop together. Emphasis is placed on communication, verbal de-escalation, team concepts for coordinated takedowns or subject transfers, and transitioning smoothly from physical control to restraint and transport. Instructors coach students on body mechanics that preserve long-term officer health and reduce cumulative strain from repeated physical interventions.
Legal and medical considerations are integrated throughout the curriculum so officers understand the operational and post-contact implications of each tactic. Students learn indicators of medical distress, safe positional time limits, and documentation best practices that support transparency and accountability.
This course is ideal for law enforcement officers and corrections personnel seeking defensively sound, evidence-based tactics rooted in Jiu-Jitsu. By prioritizing leverage, control, and minimal force, participants leave with refined technique, increased confidence, and practical skills they can apply immediately on the street. Whether used for routine custody scenarios or escalating encounters, this training strengthens an officer’s ability to control threats effectively while minimizing harm.
