Course Description

The OC Certification course is designed to first time certification or re-certifification in safe, effective, and legally defensible deployment of Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) as a use-of-force option. This training provides officers with the knowledge, practical skills, and decision-making ability required to confidently deploy OC in real-world encounters.

The course begins with classroom instruction covering the chemical properties of Oleoresin Capsicum, its physiological effects on the human body, and the variables that influence its effectiveness. Officers receive detailed instruction on legal standards governing use of force, reporting requirements, and medical considerations associated with OC exposure. Emphasis is placed on understanding when OC is an appropriate option, how it fits within the use-of-force continuum, and how to articulate its lawful deployment.

Following the classroom portion, training transitions to structured, hands-on skill development. Officers practice proper OC deployment techniques, including distance management, target area considerations, spray patterns and targeting, and post-deployment tactics. Scenario-based exercises are used to reinforce decision-making under stress, allowing officers to apply classroom concepts in controlled, realistic situations that mirror common law enforcement encounters.

The course also addresses post-exposure procedures, including subject control, decontamination considerations, monitoring for medical distress, and documentation. Officers learn how to safely manage subjects following OC exposure and how to transition to control, restraint, or arrest while maintaining officer safety and professional standards.

The OC Certification course is appropriate for corrections personnel and sworn law enforcement professionals who carry or may deploy OC spray in the course of their duties. This training reinforces best practices, supports legal defensibility, and ensures officers are prepared to deploy OC spray confidently, effectively, and responsibly in the field.
