Course Description
The Tactical Emergency Casualty Care course is designed to provide detention officers and law enforcement officers with practical instruction in the recognition and treatment of life-threatening traumatic injuries commonly encountered in the performance of their duties. Officers routinely respond to incidents involving severe trauma such as vehicle crashes, assaults, stabbings, and gunshot wounds. This course equips them with the essential skills needed to intervene quickly and effectively until advanced medical care is available.
The course begins with foundational instruction on why immediate trauma care matters for law enforcement and detention officers. Students learn to identify preventable causes of death in traumatic injuries and understand how officer safety, scene conditions, and medical priorities intersect. Emphasis is placed on the role of the officer as a first responder—not a medical provider—with training focused on simple, effective interventions that save lives.
Instruction then progresses through the core principles of Tactical Emergency Casualty Care, including threat-based priorities, rapid casualty assessment, and phased care considerations. Officers receive detailed instruction and hands-on practice in hemorrhage control using tourniquets, wound packing techniques, chest seal application for penetrating trauma, and basic airway management using nasopharyngeal airways. Each skill block is reinforced through guided practice to build confidence, efficiency, and proper technique.
As the course advances, officers apply these skills in integrated, scenario-based exercises designed to reflect realistic law enforcement encounters. Scenarios focus on decision-making, prioritization of care, communication, and reassessment under stress while maintaining scene safety. Instructors observe, coach, and provide feedback throughout each evolution to ensure students understand both the “how” and the “why” behind each intervention.
The course concludes with a review of individual first aid equipment considerations and sustainment training concepts to reinforce skill retention beyond the classroom. By the end of the training, officers will have a clear understanding of how to recognize life-threatening injuries, apply critical lifesaving techniques, and take decisive action during medical emergencies they may encounter on duty.
The Tactical Emergency Casualty Care course is ideal for patrol officers, detention officers, and other law enforcement professionals seeking practical, relevant medical training that supports officer safety, public safety, and effective emergency response.
