Course Description
Completion of our Defensive Tactics class is a prerequisite to attend these sessions.
The Open Mat Defensive Tactics Sessions are one-hour skill development blocks designed to reinforce and sharpen the techniques taught in our Defensive Tactics course. These sessions provide law enforcement officers with a structured, professional environment to practice, refine, and build confidence in control and restraint techniques grounded in Jiu-Jitsu principles.
Open Mat sessions focus on repetition, refinement, and practical application of the techniques learned in the Defensive Tactics course. Officers continue to revisit core techniques such as positional control, escapes, transitions, takedowns, and handcuffing in a supervised training setting. The goal is to improve fluidity, timing, leverage, and decision-making through consistent practice.
Each session is instructor-supervised to ensure safety, proper technique, and continued skill development. While the format allows flexibility similar to a traditional martial arts open mat, training remains purpose-driven and relevant to law enforcement application. Instructors are available to answer questions, correct mechanics, and provide coaching tailored to individual skill levels.
Open Mat sessions are ideal for officers who have previously completed our Defensive Tactics course and want to maintain and further develop proficiency. Defensive tactics skills are perishable; without regular practice, efficiency and confidence can diminish. These sessions help officers sustain muscle memory, reinforce proper body mechanics, and remain prepared to apply control techniques safely and effectively in the field.
Training emphasizes control, restraint, and minimal-force application, reinforcing techniques that prioritize officer safety while reducing the risk of injury to subjects and officers alike. Participants work at appropriate intensity levels and are encouraged to focus on technical improvement rather than competition.
The Open Mat Defensive Tactics Sessions are suitable for officers of all experience levels who want to continue developing their defensive tactics capability in a structured, professional training environment. Regular participation supports long-term skill retention, improved confidence, and operational readiness during physical encounters.
